Tomah High School held its annual Youth Apprenticeship Signing Day and three high school students have signed their commitments to Gerke Excavating.

Congratulations to Owen Gerke, Jacob Squires, and Ryan Thorson. Their dedication to learning and growth is truly commendable. Both Ryan and Owen are going through a Registered Apprenticeship in heavy equipment operating.

Both will take classes at the Local 139 Operating Engineers in Coloma and work full time at Gerke Excavating. Jacob will be doing a Health Safety Environment internship through Gerke.

He will work through his internship for the next four summers where he will be introduced to different OSHA, MSHA, and DOT Standards, developing safe work practices, writing standardized training manuals, and teaching said standards, attending and presenting at the annual company safety training, and developing and conducting new hire training programs.

Tomah's Youth Apprenticeship had 53 students this year in the following career pathways: Agriculture, Marketing, Hospitality, Manufacturing, Health, Finance, Education, Business, Transportation, Information Technology, and Architecture/Construction.

Youth Apprenticeships are open to any junior and senior who are on track to graduate, maintain good attendance, and are employed in a job that can follow a career pathway.

If your future junior or senior is interested in doing a Youth Apprenticeship, please email Dawn Pierce: [email protected]
