State Lawmaker Continues to Push for Creation of Task Force on Missing and Murdered Black Women and Girls

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2024 -- 2:00 PM

(Bob Hague, Wisconsin Radio Network) A state lawmaker continues to push for creation of a task force on missing and murdered Black women and girls in Wisconsin.

According to Bob Hague with Wisconsin Radio Network, Representative Sheila Stubbs joined other lawmakers, family members of victims and advocates at the Capitol last week. The Madison Democrat wants action from Democratic Attorney General Josh Kaul.

A bill to create the task force passed the Assembly but never received a vote in the Senate. Stubbs said that while the AG is supportive of the bill, he has not created the task force and is asking for the legislature to act. Stubbs said she doesn’t want to wait another six months.

A statement from Kaul’s office said the Wisconsin Department of Justice agrees that action is needed to address this important issue, and the agency remains committed to continuing to have discussions about obtaining adequate resources for a task force.

The proposed task force would be similar to the DOJ task force on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
