Monday, June 9th, 2008 -- 11:43 AM
It's been a tough year for the Wisconsin Rapids-area paper industry.Six months ago, NewPage purchased Stora Enso North America for $2.6 billion. NewPage announced Friday it will eliminate nearly 200 local administrative positions over the next year.
Many of the 200 employees work at the RiverBlock office building in Wisconsin Rapids, though the exact positions are unknown.
Jobs will be eliminated periodically over the next year, and the layoffs will continue through July or August 2009.
The news comes about three weeks before another paper mill makes reductions when 500 Domtar jobs will be eliminated starting June 27.
NewPage's local paper mill facilities include sites in Biron, Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point and Whiting.
