MUSSER NOT RUNNING FOR REELECTION

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008 -- 1:15 PM

A long time state legislator is hanging it up. Representative Terry Musser, a Republican from the Black River Falls area, says he won't run for re-election.

Musser says he's fed up with what he call the nastiness and vindictiveness that rules the Capitol these days. Also a factor, the revelation last year that Musser has inaccurately claimed for years to have been a member of the Green Berets in Vietnam.

"It does somewhat," Musser says, "When you look at these elections, no personal attack is out of bounds. It had a bearing."

But Musser says the main thing that made up his mind not to run again is the vicious, personal attacks he took from him Republican colleagues for pushing through a law to help victims of rape get emergency contraception.

"Some people say it's a retirement, but I probably look at it as getting out of the fishbowl and going back to the farm and talking with my cows, who you can actually reason with, versus too seldom here in this building," Musser adds.

Musser has chaired the Assembly Committee on Veterans and Military Affairs. He was elected in a 1984.
