Eau Claire Sheriff's Department Warns Residents of Phone Scam
Thursday, April 25th, 2024 -- 12:00 PM
The Eau Claire County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents of a phone scam.
Scammers are impersonating law enforcement officials, claiming that individuals have outstanding warrants and demanding immediate payment to avoid arrest. Scammers call pretending to be from law enforcement agencies. They inform you of a supposed warrant for your arrest.
They demand payment via gift cards or Bitcoin to resolve the warrant. You can spot the scam because the caller will use pressure tactics. Scammers often use high-pressure tactics to get you to act quickly.
Legitimate law enforcement agencies will NEVER demand payment via gift cards or Bitcoin. Scammers may use technology to display a false caller ID, making it seem like they're calling from a legitimate number.
If you receive this call, hang up immediately. Do NOT provide any personal or financial information. Remember, law enforcement agencies will NEVER demand payment over the phone.
Be cautious of unsolicited calls asking for personal information or payment. If in doubt, verify the caller's identity by contacting law enforcement directly.
