Several Teens Injured After High Speed Chase that Ended in Nekoosa

Wednesday, April 24th, 2024 -- 1:00 PM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) A high-speed chase in Nekoosa ended with a crash that injured six occupants in the vehicle.

According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, the incident began Sunday at 1:45 AM when officers attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle that ran a stop sign at a high rate of speed. The driver ignored the officers and continued from Nekoosa into the Town of Port Edwards.

Officers noted that the chase reached speeds of 130 miles per hour. At one point the driver turned off their headlights. The driver looped back into Nekoosa where they struck a deer and crashed into a utility pole.

Officers saw the 17-year-old driver and 18-year-old passenger leave the scene on foot. Officers were able to track them down and arrest them for numerous charges including recklessly endangering safety, reckless driving, hit-and-run causing injury, and OWI with a passenger under the age of 16.

He will also face charges for failing to provide aid to a victim. The driver appeared in court this week and is being held on a $75,000 bond. The passenger’s bond was set at $10,000. The driver was not identified due to their age.

The passenger, Chase Hintz of Nekoosa, will face a count for being a party to the crime of fleeing or eluding an officer and failing to provide aid to a victim. They’ll also face a count of felony bail jumping.

At least four injured passengers, all in their teens, remained in the vehicle. They were taken by ambulance to a local hospital but have since been released.
