TDS REPORTS THEFT OF TELEPHONE WIRE
Monday, May 12th, 2008 -- 11:25 AM
The high price of copper is apparently behind a theft on Neillsville's north side last week.According to police reports, TDS Telecom reported over one mile of copper telephone cable valued at over $6,000 was taken from their storage facility on 15th Street.
Scavengers typically melt the plastic insulation and sell the valuable metal at scrap yards?though restrictions on copper sales are making that more difficult.
The price of copper sits close to $4 per pound - nearly quadrupling in the past couple of years.
