FOOD DRIVE THIS SATURDAY

Thursday, May 8th, 2008 -- 12:13 PM

It's believed to be the largest food drive in the country, and the local area always gets involved in a large way.

The National Letter Carriers' Food Drive will be held this Saturday.

"It's been kind of building every year," explains Mark Cook, who helps organize Neillsville's effort, "The last couple years, we've been right around 3,000 to 4,000 pounds of food."

Those donations are turned over to local food pantries, who report extra need with the sour economy.

In past years, nearly one in ten area households have donated. Cook is hoping for even better support this year thanks to help from community groups and businesses.

"Everybody from churches helping us publicize things to local businesses donating their services and food for the volunteers. The whole community really pitches in and helps out," Cook says.

It's easy to participate: just leave your donation of non-perishable food at your mailbox and your letter carrier will pick it up.

If you'd rather drop off the donation yourself, you can bring your donation to the Post Office lobby.

"If somebody has a real large amount, you can just call the Post Office and we'll have someone make a special trip to pick it up," Cook explains, "That actually happened a couple years ago. Somebody's relative had just passed away, so they decided to clean out the cupboards and we went down and picked out all the foods."
