KIND CALLS FOR MORE CONSERVATION SPENDING
Monday, May 5th, 2008 -- 8:51 AM
Congressman Ron Kind says two of every three farmers who request conservation assistance are turned away by the USDA.The La Crosse Democrat offered a motion on the House floor directing farm bill negotiators maintain the highest levels of funding for critical conservation programs. He says the legislators who are crafting the final farm bill compromise have the option of taking the provisions of the bill passed in the House or Senate.
Kind fears the bill will shift conservation payments to other programs, such as subsidies.
The farm bill passed by the House last summer allocated an increase of $5.7-billion in conservation spending over the next 10 years, but the conference committee cut that to $4-billion.
A vote on Kind's motion will be taken on Monday.
