The Marshfield Fire Department responded to a fire at an apartment on Friday.

According to a report from the Marshfield Fire Department, the fire occurred on March 15th, around 10:32pm at the Laurel Gardens Apartments at 617 W Laurel Ct. in Marshfield.

Marshfield Fire and Rescue initially responded with 9 personnel to a report of an oven fire with heavy black smoke filling the apartment. On arrival at the address, the residents of the apartment complex were found standing outside.

A Marshfield Police Officer informed them that a fire extinguisher was used on the stove. Interior attack crew made entry and found heavy smoke conditions in the first-floor hallway and in the apartment of origin. No active fire was found.

Ventilations efforts were used to remove smoke and toxic gasses from the apartment complex. Once the atmosphere was clear all residents were allowed back into their apartment. A total of 11 MFRD firefighters responded with assistance from the Marshfield Police Department.

MFRD was on scene for approximately 45 minutes and there were no injuries to firefighters or residents of the apartment. The origin of the fire was in the broiler drawer of a natural gas stove/oven unit. The cause of the fire was improperly stored plasticware in the broiler drawer overheating.

The stove/oven had significant damage to the unit. The walls around the stove/oven were blackened. There was smoke damage in the apartment of origin and hallways. The Marshfield Fire Department reminds residents to never store anything on a stove, in an oven, or in a broiler/warming drawer.

Also, always remain present in the kitchen while cooking, never leave cooking food unsupervised. More cooking safety tips can be found at: https://www.nfpa.org/education-and-research/home-fire-safety/cooking
