The Thorp FFA has received a $5000 grant.
Arlene and Robert Kodl decided to nominate the Thorp FFA as grant recipients in 2022 for the money to be used to improve the locally grown lunch initiative and education for students in the Thorp AG Program.
Last year, Thorp received $5000, but this year, under a stipulation in the program, Arlene was able to gain access to another $5000 and award toward the chapters and programs efforts.
"We are utilizing the grant money to increase the technology in our 132’ high tunnel. We are purchasing a raised bed mulch layer with a drip irrigation system. This is a 3 point mounted attachment that will allow our students to make raised beds, then cover the bed with black ground mulch that includes a drip system."
"This will prevent weeds from growing around our crops and give students the knowledge they need to grow more productively. Included in our grant will be the purchase of an Lp mulch burner. This tool allows us to cut a perfect hole in the black mulch where the plant will be transplanted," said Mr. Schraufnagel
This year, they are planning on growing 250 tomatoes, 200 peppers, 300 garlic plants, 350 beets and 450 onions. With these funds they will be able to increase their efforts in teaching students about growing food.
Planting will begin in 1 week with starting seeds in the greenhouse that will be ready for transplant in mid-April.
