Loyal School District Students Create Online Etiquette Project
Friday, March 8th, 2024 -- 12:00 PM

Loyal FCCLA students Payton Tsai and Olivia Nikolai have completed an online etiquette project.
According to the students, they decided to do this project because the Loyal School District has suffered from inappropriate use of social media in the past, and they wanted to teach people in the school the correct way to behave online.
In the past there had been school “meme accounts” that posted unconsented pictures of students and bullied them publicly. They wanted to teach people how to behave online to prevent other incidents like this from happening in the future.
In their project, they show statistics of Americans and their use of the internet and social media to back up their topics of cyberbullying, inappropriate use of the internet and social media; how to correctly use the internet and social media; and how to stay safe on the internet.
They hope that in this presentation they will inform people of the issues with cyberbullying and how to avoid it. They also hope they will successfully teach people how to stay safe and how to treat others online, to help get rid of cyberbullying in our communities.
The students went further saying, we live in a very small rural area, with a school population of 510 students. In the school district everyone knows everyone and their moms, and in knowing this, everybody is friends with almost everyone.
This makes it very easy for people to find out information about others. This ease of access to information has caused a lot of inappropriate use of the internet along with cyberbullying.
The school has had lots of meetings with kids and parents about cyberbullying and how to use the internet correctly, but this doesn't seem like it has been fixing the issue.
So, they decided to take action and resolve the issue themselves by informing people about the issues that have been happening and how to fix them. A simple video like this might just be enough to encourage people to behave better on the internet once they know the consequences of their actions.
The students Digital Stories for Change project fits into all four career pathways supported by the Family and Consumer Science programs, and numerous Family and Consumer science coursework areas.
Hospitality and Tourism correlations include any career in food service, the school offers a wide variety of culinary classes, especially since they are from a small town. Their FCCLA activities teach them the importance of organizing events, and the many steps involved.
Their video is important to these areas because inappropriate online behavior of guests or employees can cost business. Human Services involves any careers in the education or childcare industry.
The in-school FCS offerings in Child Development are an asset. Loyal is also connected to online classes in the Assistant Childcare Teacher programs at the designated technical college.
Their video would be a great teaching tool for older students involved, and also to help families teach online skills and appropriateness to their children. Education and Training careers are any of the vast areas of teachers needed in our society.
Being a small school, they don’t offer classes for future educators, but they have a number of students involved in Educators Rising through the CESA affiliation. Several STAR events feature teaching students at different age levels and in different disciplines.
FCCLA members learn valuable skills needed for future employment, and having good online manners is a huge asset to families, the school and future career. Visual Arts and Design, the 4th career pathway, offers careers in fashion, stage, home furnishing and interior design
FCS offerings in any event planning are very helpful. Classes in interior design and fabrics are essential to learning the basics in these areas. There are many STAR events in the Visual Arts and Design pathway, and students develop important skills moving ahead in these areas.
Once again, families, students and future businesses rely on appropriate online choices to seek information and build our futures. You can see the video that goes with the project and more about the project here: https://www.loyal.k12.wi.us/district-news/online-etiquette
