Thorp School District Will Have Four-Year Operational Referendum on April 2nd Election Ballot

The Thorp School District will have a four-year operational referendum question on the April 2nd Election ballot.
Earlier this year, the District contemplated a capital referendum to construct a new gymnasium and provide much-needed maintenance repairs. A Facility Advisory Committee met several times to review projects and prioritize needs.
The District is grateful for the input received during these meetings. However, after reviewing the District’s financial position with the new state budget, they realized an operational referendum was more pressing to maintain the District’s programming and staffing levels.
They felt pursuing a capital referendum at the same time would be too much of a strain for the community. On the April 2, 2024 ballot, those living within the Thorp School District will see a $900,000/year question to cover operational expenses.
The estimated tax impact for the four-year operational referendum is $116/year per $100,000 assessed property value. Wisconsin property taxes have a direct impact on school funding. The School District of Thorp has remained fiscally conservative in its spending.
The 2022-2023 mill rate was $6.23, below the state average of $7.68 and the lowest it has been in the last decade. A mill equals $1 of tax for each $1,000 of assessed property value.
