Wausau Man Reaches Plea Deal for Charges of Recklessly Endangering Safety

Thursday, February 8th, 2024 -- 2:01 PM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) A Wausau man who was the subject of a two-week manhunt has reached a plea deal covering multiple open cases and dozens of felony counts.

According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, Walter Calloway Jr will serve one year in the Marathon County Jail and seven years on probation. Details of the sentence also include a domestic violence surcharge, absolute sobriety from drugs and alcohol, and the completion of all treatment or counseling.

Judge Gregory Strasser also handed the 31-year-old a six-year prison sentence that’s been imposed and stayed, meaning if he fails to complete his probation he will spend at least three years in the state prison system followed by three years on extended supervision.

Wausau Police issued a be on the lookout for Calloway in late October, saying he was wanted for multiple felony counts related to a domestic violence incident. That came after he escaped through a bathroom window of a Wausau apartment as officers were escorting a woman back to the unit to retrieve some belongings.

Investigators say Calloway had threatened to shoot the woman multiple times, holding a gun to her head in at least one incident. He had also been accused of stealing her phone and car keys to prevent her from getting help.
