Greenwood School Board Approves Truancy Representative and More

The Greenwood School Board approved the Truancy Representative at their meeting on Wednesday.

Middle/High School Dean of Students and Athletic Director Jenni Mayenschein was selected. The Board also approved the Pupil Non-Discrimination Report and discussed next year’s school calendar.

It will tentatively be approved in February; it has a start date of August 26, 2024 and the end date of June 5, 2025; six in-service days prior to the start of the school year to be determined with staff input.

The Board also discussed Summer Recreation. It was started 7 years ago by the school district and is doing well. Includes 4K & 5 t-ball and 8U, 10U, 12U, and 14U girls softball and boys baseball. There are background checks done on all of the coaches involved. Looking to get donations from local businesses to help fund the program. Would like to see more games at the elementary field.

The Board also heard an update on the Community Survey. The survey is going to be posted in the TRG as a part of the newsletter. TRG postal zones are not the same. Some people that are not in the district will get the survey. They will put a reminder out to parents to fill out the survey.

The Board also discussed open enrollment limits. There is 1 spot available for cross category special education for grades 7-9. There are 2 spots available for cross category special education for grades 10-12. There is no other space available for open enrolled in special education students for grades EC-6. There is unlimited space for open enrolled in regular education students for grades EC-12.

The Board also heard about the Math Expressions Extension. They will be extending Math Expressions for another 4 years and it will continue to be the same version that’s currently being used. It was also mentioned that all tax level payments have been received from all townships. They also had the first reading of policy update 33.1 and Board agendas will be posted on the District's Facebook page starting in February.

In employment matters, the Board approved the resignation of Shane Lilly as Elementary Principal. They approved the hiring of Jenny Hinker as Head Volleyball Coach, Kelsey Hoverson as MS Volleyball Coach, Kevin Lucas as Head Baseball Coach, and Alex Volovsek as Assistant JV Baseball Coach.

The Board also heard the Administrators’ Reports. Elementary Principal Shane Lilly reported on:

  • Winter weather, they have enough snow gear to safely dress all of our students who need assistance, they keep the kids inside when it feels like temperatures are below zero;
  • Family Game Night will be at the elementary from 4:30-7:30 with a variety of games for families to play, refreshments included;
  • Mrs. Green won a grant last year that awards her and the school with a sizable number of toys that can be used for gifts;
  • 7 Mindsets, the SEL program is going well, wonderful conversations and projects going on in the classrooms because of this program;
  • For the math challenge, their upper level students (4th-6th grades) are doing a math fluency challenge over the next few months;
  • For Martin Luther King Day, teacher and students engaged in conversations and activities surrounding the life and contributions of Dr. King;
  • Recognition of Mrs. Denk and how helpful she is;
  • 2nd grade went outside and built 3D models of mathematical shapes;
  • For Art Night, they are planning for this event to take place in May;
  • Mrs. Eilts and Ms. Brhyn are doing a drumming unit with yoga balls;
  • The window for Winter Fastbridge has ended and still compiling the data from that;
  • And they’ve purchased four more years of Math Expression.

Dean of Students and Athletic Director Jenni Mayenschein reported on:

  • Middle school will be going to Bruce Mound for the skiing unit for Phy Ed;
  • Middle school is planning an incentive trip on 3/12/24 to the Sawmill Adventure Park in Rothschild;
  • ACT day;
  • FFA rodeo trip will be on 2/3/24;
  • Band & Choir concert will be on 2/19/24;
  • Middle school girls running one team with 6 girls;
  • High school basketball hit the middle of the season mark;
  • Girls Basketball is having a good start to the season;
  • 3 Act play practice has started, Peter Pan performance will be the weekend of 3/22/24-3/24/24;
  • E-sports competition with 100+ schools, E-sports scholarships, Fall season will be Super Smash Bros., Winter season will be Fortnite.

District Administrator and Middle/High School Principal Joe Green reported on:

  • 2024 WASB Convention (421 Districts in attendance);
  • Enrollment – 50% of the districts in Wisconsin are small, rural school district;
  • Budget- The state stopped using inflation models to determine per pupil revenue in 2010, they are approximately $3,380 per student behind inflation, their tax burden has fallen to 32nd in the nation;
  • UW Bill (AB370) – Top 10% would be guaranteed admission to any UW institution, top 5% for Madison, this all goes by class rank;
  • Revenue Limit (Referendum) – Under the current law if a referendum fails the revenue limit of a district would remain frozen for 3 years;
  • FORT Exam – Gives and alternative pathway to licensure for all license categories, this would be supported by all districts;
  • Multi-District Board Gathering – This would bring some area boards together to talk about issues, compare notes, share ideas, and work and learn from each other;
  • Mr. Werner and Mrs. Nikolai have started the registration process with students for next school year, focusing on selecting courses that fit student needs and interest, once courses are selected they will put together the master schedule;
  • Middle School Incentives – The program focuses on homework, grades, and behaviors.

During the Communications from the Public portion of the meeting, Mary Denk talked about Loyal not wanting to co-op with Greenwood. Greenwood should look for another school that would be on board for a co-op.

Jack Wissell would like the school to clear the snow off of Division Street so students don’t have to walk through the snow to get on the bus. He would be willing to shovel if he could bill the school for his services.

Finally, the heard a presentation from Mrs. Johnson about Math Competition. Edgar hosted a middle school Math Competition. There were 92 students that made up 23 teams total. Greenwood had 12 students that made up 3 teams compete. They took 9th and 10th place.
