Bill Giving Seniors More Time to Find New Care Center if Their Current Facility Closes One Step Closer to Becoming Law

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2024 -- 10:00 AM

(Benita Mathew, Green Bay Press-Gazette) A bill that would give seniors more time to find a new care center if they had to move out of their current facility just became one step closer to becoming law.

According to Benia Mathew with the Green Bay Press-Gazette, the bill, started by Green Bay-area legislators, passed the state Senate on Tuesday. Under the bill, any resident in a nursing home or community-based residential facility, a type of assisted living, would get at least 60 days' notice that they need to leave the facility.

That doubles the time frame under current state law of 30 days for residents who need to relocate, though DHS protections ensure that residents would not be forced to move out immediately if the search for a new facility takes longer than a month.

The original bill proposed tripling the required time to 90 days, but it was amended to 60 days.
