Wednesday, March 26th, 2008 -- 11:29 AM
Eau Claire has become only the fifth Wisconsin city to pass a public smoking ban.On a 7-4 vote Tuesday, the council approved an ordinance prohibiting smoking in workplaces, including bars and some outdoor public areas, such as stadiums.
"I think Henry David Thoreau must be rolling over in his grave right now," commented Council member Berlye Middleton, "He said 'government governs best which governs least'."
But council member Dave Duax, an author of the ban, said the Eau Claire County Board is now expected to consider a county-wide smoking ban.
The ban takes effect July 1st. Fines run from 50 dollars to 500 dollars.
