Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is most common from November to May, with cases typically peaking in January or February.
Marshfield Clinic Health System is warning Wisconsin residents that the state is currently seeing RSV cases on the rise. The respiratory virus can be serious, especially for young kids. One Wisconsin family shares their RSV scare with their young son, Cohen, in an effort to help raise awareness for protecting kids against the virus.
Cohen’s mom Kara said, “At just 5 months old, Cohen was hit with RSV and everything escalated so quickly. By day 4, he was having chest retractions, wheezing and stridor while breathing. A coughing fit led us to call 911 because he was struggling to breathe and changing color, a parent’s absolute worst nightmare.”
She continued, “He was hospitalized at Marshfield Children’s Hospital where he spent a week after being diagnosed with acute respiratory failure and RSV bronchiolitis. We are so thankful for all the doctors, nurses and respiratory therapists who brought our little Cohen back to health!”
