Slopes Improving at Granite Peak Ski Resort

Friday, January 5th, 2024 -- 8:10 AM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) The slopes are improving at Granite Peak Ski Resort after a late start to the season and slushy December forced them to close for Christmas.

According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, General Manager Greg Fisher says cooling temps have worked in their favor, allowing them to make snow more efficiently and open more runs.

“December was one of the more mild, if not the most mild, that we’ve had in a very long time here in Wausau,” said Fisher. “But 2024 has rolled around and Mother Nature seems to have dropped the temperatures so we have been actively making snow since the first of the year.”

Fisher says the milder temps have been good for the ticket counter as the New Year’s holiday brought out more families than usual. “With it not being really cold [everyone] was able to get out there and enjoy themselves.”

He doesn’t expect that the late start and less-than-ideal conditions will mean an early end to the season. Fisher says if temperatures stay cool and some natural snowfall comes our way, there’s no reason to think the season won’t stretch into March or April.

“We’re making snow east and west and we will be coming back to bolster up our base towards the end of the month on our main trails which are really what you ski well into spring. It is a long winter still and we do see a cold January coming in and some shots at snow in the immediate forecast so I think we will be just fine,” he added.

Skiers can check Granite Peak’s website and social media platforms for updates on snow conditions and which runs are open.
