The Clark County Sheriff’s Department congratulates Corrections Sergeant Gurney and Corrections Sergeant Becker on their recent promotions.

They interviewed them both about leadership, and what it means to them in their new supervisory roles. The questions were:

  • Why did you seek promotion to Corrections Sergeant;
  • How would you describe your style of leadership;
  • Were there any leaders in your career that left a lasting impression on you? If yes, how so;
  • What would be your advice to a new corrections deputy seeking a leadership position later in their career?

Sergeant Gurney said he sought a promotion to continue to challenge himself in his career. He intends on doing everything he can to train his replacement. None of us will continue our career forever, whatever it may be.

This style creates a highly trained and capable staff that can only help serve the Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Clark County more effectively. He believes it's about working with him, not working for him.

As a young man in a different career he was given the opportunity to take the role of Assistant Foreman which lead to a Foreman position eventually, leading a group of peers all of whom were his elders, most of whom had more experience in the department.

“Cleaver” taught him a tremendous amount from organizational skills, to how to conduct yourself in a leadership role and gain the respect of the people working with you. May he rest in peace. He said never stop learning, growing, and challenging yourself.  Be curious, ask questions, and listen to the answers.

Sergeant Becker said he sought the promotion because with 9+ years of service to the Sheriff’s Office he believed it was time to take on the extra responsibility. As for his style of leadership, he believes people should lead by example and his time as night Sgt. provided him consistency on many aspects of the job.

He also said you should learn as much as you can, when you can and you never know when the opportunity to grow will present itself.
