Greenwood School Board Discusses April Referendum and More

The Greenwood School Board discussed the April 2nd Referendum.

The Board stated the goal is to keep a healthy fund balance and the mill rate low. The Board also discussed a community survey that had topics about consolidation, revisit co-op colors and mascot, and feasibility. The District is also looking at purchasing a 2015 Dodge Caravan to try and meet increased transportation needs.

The Board also discussed old laptops, Chromebooks, and desktops. There are about 70 laptops, chromebooks, and desktops that are out of rotation that have been factory reset. The Board approved to sell the old equipment to Greenwood School District staff and to the public for $10 a piece in “as is” condition.

The Board also approved a donation of 16 cases of water from John’s Lawn Care for the concession stand and Lois and Dallas Wuethrich donated Christmas lunch for all students and staff.

In employment matters, the Board approved the resignations of Ryan Joten as the Middle School Boys Basketball Coach, effective at the conclusion of the 2023 season and Dean Lindner as the Head Baseball Coach.

The Board approved the hiring of Tina Zimmer as an Administrative Assistant, Katelynn Wussow as a middle school teacher long-term sub for Hannah Olson, Rogan Travis as a Substitute Teacher, and Wendy Hinker for her terms of employment.

The Board also heard the Administrators’ Reports. Elementary Principal Shane Lilly reported on:

  • December 8 they had about 90 community members play Bingo;
  • 300 to 400 books were donated;
  • This month they had bingo, concerts, hot coco, and read along in the building;
  • They will be giving a gift to each of the students at Greenwood Elementary;
  • Ms. Magnuson has been coaching the dance team and they will be performing at the varsity game during halftime, there are about 20 girls signed up;
  • Brittany Lotzer has been doing a fantastic job in the transition as 5th grade teacher;
  • First grade is one of the largest classes this year, Julie and Abbi are doing a fantastic job managing the class;
  • The Christmas concert went very well;
  • Fastbridge: January is the next screener, this will give a visual aid in determining where student progress is;
  • And EduClimber: is a tool that can track student data, working on navigating the program and working out some issues.

Director of Instruction Noah Werner reported on:

  • HRS Update, Group has been working on lagging indicators form HRS survey data;
  • Course Scheduling, he and Mrs. Nikolai have been working on course scheduling for 2024-2025, course handbook is being reviewed;
  • In talks with Loyal on how we are going to continue to grow and to collaborate;
  • Greenwood is set to host neighboring districts in a Youth Apprenticeship interview day that will be held on February 21, 2024;
  • Academic Awards/Honor Roll, Honor Roll for MS/HS will be posted and academic awards will be handed out, most of the students that received F’s for first trimester were able to change their schedule to retake the failing course;
  • Loyal/Greenwood CAD, 6 students from Loyal have joined Intro to CAD, this brings a total of 17 students in the class, the class has been running smoothly;
  • Students in CTE courses earned 28 different IRCs (Industry Recognized Credentials) during Trimester 1.

District Administrator and Middle/High School Principal Joe Green reported on:

CEP Breakfast and Lunch Sustainability:

  • Not sure free breakfast and lunch will be sustainable for multiple years, they are currently at 42% free and reduced meals, the rate of reimbursement in this program will leave them somewhere between $30,000 - $40,000 short that will have to be transferred from Fund 10 to cover;

Office and Civil Rights Audit:

  • The district is in a Civil Rights audit year, this is extremely time intensive for the office staff as they pull documents and data to share the civil rights compliance;

Pupil Non-Discrimination Audit:

  • They are also being audited for their pupil non-discrimination policies and procedures, this is quite time intensive as well;

Financial Audit 2022-2023 update:

  • Casey, Jeanie, and Mr. Green had a final call with theit financial auditors to finalize our audit;

Middle School Behaviors:

  • Mr. Green has met with all middle school students and sent a note home to all parents, behaviors have been improving drastically and office referrals have decreased significantly;

Santa Project:

  • They are so thankful for all the wonderful and generous donations for their students to participate in the Santa Project, thank you, Wendy and Jenni for organizing this and making it the best one yet for the students;

Newsletter:

  • Planning on the next newsletter to come out at the end of February/beginning of March;

Christmas Meal:

  • Lois and Dallas Wuethrich have again sponsored a Christmas lunch for all students and staff, the meal will be served on Thursday, December 21st, huge thank you to them for this great holiday gift to The Greenwood School District.
