Kaul Looking for Legislative Action on Guns in 2024

Tuesday, December 19th, 2023 -- 9:00 AM

(Bob Hague, WRN) Attorney General Josh Kaul hopes the New Year brings legislative action on guns.

The Democratic AG wants background checks for private party gun sales. “There's no background check that happens. And so the common sense mechanism that could keep guns out of the hands of people we know to be dangerous, has not seen legislative action.”

And Kaul notes the Office of School Safety and it’s 24/7 tip line runs out of funding at the end of next year. “So, it's vital that in the current legislative session, we get long term funding for that office so it can keep doing the work it does to keep our kids as safe as possible in schools.”

Kaul continued, “So, that anytime there is a firearm being sold, that a background check needs to be conducted. Also, we've all seen how safety issues at schools have grown dramatically in the last few decades. And this is an office that we run through the Department of Justice that has been very effective in putting in place procedures and setting up a 24/7 tip line that anybody with concerns about school safety can call.”

The office and the tip line will run out of funding by the end of next year.
