(Thomas Schumacher, WSAU) The Wisconsin Rapids Police Department responded to a standoff on Thursday.
According to Thomas Schumacher with WSAU, the standoff ended shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday, as the suspect was taken into custody after authorities had reached a peaceful agreement between all parties.
Wisconsin Rapids Deputy Police Chief Scott DeWitt told News 9 that an investigation had originally stemmed from a high-speed chase in Marathon County a few weeks ago, where a man was believed to have shot at a sheriff’s deputy there.
The investigation then led them to a neighborhood near the Sonoco mill off Fremont Street, and police say they had tried to approach the man’s house, but the man refused to let them in and said there were weapons inside the house.
Bystanders told News 9 they were shocked by the scene and the amount of law enforcement on scene. There are still details that need to be investigated, and all streets previously blocked off have re-opened.
