Wausau Fire Department and SAFER Perform Ice Rescue

Monday, December 11th, 2023 -- 11:00 AM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) Ice conditions remain thin.

Accoring to Mike Leischner with WSAU, one person found that out the hard way on Friday, leading to a water rescue event for the SAFER and Wausau Fire Department. According to SAFER, they were called to the Bluegill Bay boat landing at noon on Friday for a report of someone who had broken through ice and fallen into the water.

Rescue workers found the victim about 100 feet offshore. They managed to get them into an airboat and back to safety. The victim was sent to a local hospital for a checkup. DNR wardens issued a warning about thin ice conditions across the state last Monday.

That was before two days of mild temperatures on Thursday and Friday, meaning ice conditions should be considered unsafe for now. More warm conditions are expected at the end of this week into the weekend.
