Governor Evers Signs Bill Providing Free Driver’s Ed for Low-Income Students

(Ted Ehlen, WRN) Governor Tony Evers signed a bill Wednesday offering free driver's education courses to low-income students.
The bipartisan legislation directs the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to allocate $6 million every year to driver's ed tuition. The state already set aside the grant money from industry fees paid to the state by Wisconsin insurance providers to fund the program.
Students who qualify for the program must also qualify for the federal free and reduced school lunch program. Most private driver’s education programs cost around $450, which is something many Wisconsin families can't afford for their teens. Lawmakers hopes the action helps curb reckless driving.
