Republican Bill Would Transfer Elections Oversight to Secretary of State
Wednesday, December 6th, 2023 -- 8:01 AM
(Bob Hague, WRN) A Republican proposal to abolish the Wisconsin Elections Commission.
A group of Assembly Republicans wants the secretary of state’s office to assume the commission’s role, effective June 30. That’s four months before the 2024 presidential election and would put Democrat Sarah Godlewski in charge of overseeing it.
The bill also would require the secretary of state to get permission from standing committees in the Legislature before taking any action with regard to election administration. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos has previously opposed putting the secretary of state in charge of elections.
Governor Tony Evers would be certain to veto the bill if it reaches his desk.
