COOPERATIVE WASTEWATER PLANS MOVE FORWARD

The two communities' school districts decided not to consolidate, but the cities of Greenwood and Loyal [i]are[/i] cooperating in a most unusual way.Loyal has just received $258,000 in Community Development Block Grant funding for its wastewater collection and treatment facility upgrade.
The project is part of a partnership between the cities of Loyal and Greenwood in which Loyal will upgrade its pump station, and sewer main will be laid for about 3-miles between Loyal and Greenwood's regional wastewater treatment facility.
According to Loyal public works director Tom Duell, it would cost around $4-million to upgrade their current lagoon system. This cooperative option will only cost around $1-million.
Loyal produces around 1,000 gallons of wastewater per day. Greenwood will charge Loyal a user fee.
The system should be up and running by September.
To the best of Duell's knowledge, this is the first such cooperative effort in the state.
