New Study Looks at Wisconsin Corrections

Monday, October 30th, 2023 -- 10:01 AM

(Bob Hague, WRN) A new report looks at corrections in Wisconsin.

Wisconsin puts more people in prison per 100,000 residents than the national average. Wisconsin Policy Forum researcher Ari Brown. “Wisconsin is also above each of its four neighboring states. So Michigan is the next closest at 321, Iowa 268, Illinois at 225 and Minnesota 140.”

And Black Wisconsinites have the nation’s highest incarceration rate, "In 2021 that was 2104 individuals per 100,000 residents, which is nearly 200 residents higher than the next highest state which was Oklahoma. The black white disparity in Wisconsin is the third highest of any state.”

Brown also stated, "Wisconsin's state prison population in 2021, which is the most recent year for which there's data available, was 344 per 100,000 population. That's a rate not total amount of prisoners. The national rate was 316 per 100,000. So we're above that. Wisconsin is also above each of its four neighboring states.”

Brown continued, “Basically in every year from 2000, the first year for which we found data until 2020, these revocations for rule violations were the leading cause for prison admissions in the state. They were above 30% of prison admissions every year up until last year.”
