Former Wausau Woman Enters Plea for Child Neglect Death
Thursday, October 26th, 2023 -- 3:00 PM
(Mike Leischner, WSAU) A former Wausau woman accused of child neglect in the death of her infant son pled no contest on Tuesday.
According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, Shailey Huron was scheduled to go to trial today. But, at the last minute, the proceedings became a plea hearing. Huron was then found guilty by Judge Gregory Strasser.
The 26-year-old, who now lists an address in Texas, has been facing one felony count of child neglect-causing death. Police say the death stemmed from a night of drinking and marijuana use by Huron and another man in 2020. Huron placed the three-month-old in bed with her and the man.
Autopsy results showed the boy died from asphyxiation associated with an unsafe sleeping environment. Investigators say Huron was warned by a hospital nurse, a pediatrician, and a public health nurse that it was dangerous to sleep with her child.
She will be sentenced for the charge on December 29th, facing up to 25 years in prison and $100,000 in fines.
