Wisconsin Legislators Introduce Bill To Protect The Good Name Of Maple Syrup
Sunday, October 15th, 2023 -- 7:05 AM
Wisconsin legislators recently introduced a bill to protect the good name of maple syrup -- and the state's economy.
WKOW-TV reports that the Truth in Maple Syrup bill would require restaurants to distinguish between pure, real maple syrup and maple syrup analogs like "breakfast syrup" or "maple-flavored syrup."
The bill acts much like the DAIRY PRIDE Act, which aims to combat the term "milk" being applied to non-dairy products like soy and almond milk.
Similar laws already exist in the state for butter and honey.
According to Senator Kelda Roys and Rep. Dave Considine, who introduced the bill, they say the state's maple syrup producers made over 400,000 gallons of maple syrup in 2023, which is valued at $13.9 million.
