PLENTY OF INTEREST IN HEATING PROGRAM

Thursday, February 7th, 2008 -- 3:06 PM

With fuel prices high and temperatures low, this has been the winter of discontent for many low-income families in the area.

"We're very, very busy," explains Marianne Schock from Clark County Social Services. She oversees the Home Energy Assistance program. "This year, we've already taken 1,065 (applications)."

They take applications through mid-May, Schock says.

Schock attributes the increase to the cold weather, the high price of fuel, the media getting the message out and a new state program.

"The Governor announced that there was going to be $15-million allocated for the low-income weatherization program. People that have already applied for assistance will get a supplemental check in February," Schock explains.

Despite the interest, they still have plenty of money available. The funding comes mostly from the state and federal governments.
