(Raymond Neupert, WRN) Senator Tammy Baldwin says 90 million dollars in federal grants will help Wisconsin social agencies fight the root causes of crime.
Wisconsin is getting 90 million dollars in federal grants to support crime prevention. Senator Tammy Baldwin says that will help fight the root causes of crime. "A lot of the resources go to community organizations that have a long record of helping respond to issues like substance abuse, mental health needs, and helping address the needs of crime victims."
Baldwin says she wants to see more efforts to keep people out of jail, rather than put them into jail. "Implementation of programs to support law enforcement agencies in collaborative efforts with those who are experts in mental health and behavioral health issues."
Baldwin says those funds won't just be going to police departments, but rather the social services that help support victims and parolees. "Invest in community resources that address the root causes of crime, and also help our justice system address the dangerous cycle of recidivism."
The Wisconsin Democrat says these funds are coming out of last year's budget and won't be held up by the current stalemate in Washington over this year's federal budget. Baldwin is up for reelection next year.
