Local FFA Chapters Receive FFA Food for America Ag Literacy Grant Program

Sunday, October 1st, 2023 -- 11:00 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) Eight FFA chapters in Wisconsin have received $500 grants as part of the Wisconsin Agriculture in the Classroom's inaugural FFA Food for America Ag Literacy Grant program.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, these grants will support FFA chapters in executing and evaluating agriculture literacy activities within the Food for America program, which aims to increase agricultural literacy from Pre-K through 12th grade.

In the 2022-23 school year, Wisconsin FFA chapters reached over 48,000 students and community members with their agricultural activities. The Wisconsin Ag in the Classroom program and the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Foundation are thrilled to collaborate with FFA members dedicated to enhancing agricultural literacy.

Beth Schaefer, Wisconsin Ag in the Classroom Coordinator, emphasized the program's importance, stating, "The Food for America program offers valuable learning opportunities for students of all ages.

FFA members develop activities and teach their peers, gaining essential skills in communication and project management. Learning from a peer provides a powerful educational experience."

Some local chapters receiving the grant include the Thorp FFA Chapter for "Something Sweet" and the Osseo-Fairchild Middle/High School FFA Chapter for "Agriscience Days."

The Ag in the Classroom program by Farm Bureau aims to provide teachers and K-12 students with insights into food production processes. It integrates agricultural knowledge into existing curricula, offering fundamental information about agriculture, the nation's largest industry.

The program operates through a network of local educators, volunteers, and representatives from agricultural organizations and businesses, with the goal of helping students appreciate agriculture's significance in the economy and society, thereby fostering support for sound agricultural policies.
