GOP Introduces Voter ID Constitutional Amendment

Friday, September 22nd, 2023 -- 11:01 AM

(Raymond Neupert, WRN) Republicans in the legislature are continuing efforts to modify Wisconsin's elections.

A proposed constitutional amendment would make the requirement for photo IDs at the polls permanent. Authored by Senator Van Wanggard and Representative Pat Snyder, it would circumvent the need for Governor Evers' approval and bypass a possible veto.

However, any new amendments to the state constitution must pass two consecutive sessions of the legislature and be approved by voters in a statewide referendum. Republicans have also introduced a bill to withdraw Wisconsin from the multi-state Electronic Registration Information Center which helps track voting records.
