Bill Would Offer Driver’s Ed Free to Students Taking Free Lunch

(Ted Ehlen, WRN) A proposal in the Wisconsin legislature wants to make driver’s education more affordable.
The bill would create a $6 million grant program provided to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to make driver’s ed instruction free for students who qualify for free and reduced lunch.
Proponents say a payment of $400 to $600 for the lessons is a barrier for some students ages 16 to 18 who can’t afford the class, with many waiting until they’re 18 to skip driver’s ed and take the driver’s test before getting their driver’s license.
Proponents believe the measure, which is up for debate at the Assembly, is one step to making Wisconsin roads safer.
