Marshfield Common Council Discusses Cat Declawing Ordinance and More

Thursday, September 14th, 2023 -- 10:01 AM

The Marshfield Common Council began their meeting on Tuesday hearing public input regarding a possible cat declawing ordinance for the City.

Most that spoke were in favor of banning the practice; however, there were a few that felt the City has “bigger fish to fry” than worrying about declawing cats and others worried about driving away businesses, like a veterinary service, if this ordinance is in place.

In the end, the Council did not move forward with pursuing an ordinance to ban the declawing of cats in the City of Marshfield. The Council also heard information on a new survey tool being used by the City. The Mayor also did a proclamation for National Rail Safety Week, September 18th-24th.

City Administrator Steve Barg mentioned safety items pertaining to National Rail Safety Week, a special Common Council meeting regarding the moving of the Marshfield Police Department, and recent reevaluation of property in the City.

The Council also heard information about a possible subdivision in TIF District #13 in the City. No action was taken on this item, it was just for informational purposes. The Council also heard from the candidates stepping up to be on the Marshfield Utilities Commission.

There will be two city residents and two Aldermen. No action was taken on this item and will be brought back during the next Council meeting. The Council also approved transferring $50,000 from the General Fund Contingency account to the General Fund Professional Services account for environmental investigation of a former landfill site.

The Council also approved allowing the City’s Finance Director to send out a request for proposal for property and liability insurance coverage. Finally, the Council also approved scheduling a meeting to discuss the possible move of the City’s Police Station and the appointment of a resident to the City’s Committee on Aging.
