(Raymond Neupert, WRN) Slow down for kids and school buses as school gets back into session.

Slow down for kids and school buses as school gets back into session. Cheryl Wittke with Safe Communities Dane County says school zone speeds are set low for a reason. "We know based on, you know, unfortunate situations and data, that children who are hit by cars that are traveling 40 miles an hour or more 85% of those crashes are fatal to the child."

Wittke says kids are learning new routines and may not be paying the best attention to what's going on around them. "Lit could be that they're unsure about where to cross, they maybe are crossing between cars or behind a bus, you might not have great visibility."

Wittke says simply slowing down is the best way to keep children safe. Crashes are 85 percent fatal to children when struck by a car going more than 40 miles per hour.
