Wisconsin Assembly Set to Vote This Week on Republican Tax Cut Bill

Monday, September 11th, 2023 -- 10:01 AM

(Bob Hague, WRN) At the Capitol, the state Assembly is set to vote on a Republican tax cut plan.

It would expand retirement exemptions and cut taxes nearly 1% for the state’s third income tax bracket. In last week’s committee vote, Janesville Democrat Sue Conley had concerns about a structural deficit. "We have the money today, but I don't I don't have the confidence that we're going to have the money in three years."

Committee chair, Green Bay area Republican John Maaco, said the cuts are needed. “Literally 100% of this money is going to folks that need it the most. The structural deficit question is just is it red herring.”

It passed a committee vote last week over budget deficit concerns from Democrats like Milwaukee’s Daniel Riemer. “I do come back to this 2.2 and change billion dollar general fund deficit. That makes my heart stop. Because I don't know how to solve it except by preventing it in the first place.”

Committee chair, Green Bay area Republican John Maaco, called the deficit issue “a red herring,” and said the cuts will go to people who need them the most. Governor Tony Evers has already promised a veto.
