Marathon County Board of Supervisors Considering a Measure Against Possible Future COVID Restrictions

Thursday, September 7th, 2023 -- 1:00 PM

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) The Marathon County Board of Supervisors will consider a measure against any further COVID-19 related mandates including vaccine or masking requirements.

District 6 Supervisor Stacey Morache wrote the measure. "We've been enjoying the past year where most of our freedoms have been restored in regards to masks and vaccine mandates, but we must not forget what it was like at the height of the pandemic. We must not forget how a group of people were villified because they were not willing to sacrifice bodily autonomy without informed consent."

One supervisor who supported the measure cited a recent rise in mental health issues among children. "If they keep increasing, if we keep pushing mandates and doing things that hurt and harm the children, you're going to have things get worse and worse."

But not everyone was supportive of the measure, with some questioning the language in it. "When I look at the very first whereas, number one, it's opinion, which, I think, doesn't belong in here. And number three, that is also an opinion and the articles that are used to support it do not fit the credibility requirement that I would have asked my 8th graders who were writing persuasive papers for me. You've got to look at the crediblity and expertise."

The measure passed the Health and Human Services Committee on a voice vote and will be considered by the full board at a later date. If implemented, it would be passed on to members of the state Department of Health Services and the legislature.
