PHONE SCAM HITS WOOD COUNTY
Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008 -- 1:49 PM
The Wood County Sheriff's Department is warning area residents of a phone scam.It goes like this: area residents receive a phone call requesting they call the Cook County Jail in Illinois because of family emergency.
They're directed to call a number that starts with the prefix *72 followed by a phone number. When they call, they actually transfer their phone number to a call-forwarding service, which enables the inmates to charge the phone account with future phone calls.
Obviously, authorities urge you not to fall prey to the scam. If you fear you've been victimized, call your local law enforcement agency.
