Assembly Task Force Will Look at Human Trafficking in Wisconsin

Wednesday, September 6th, 2023 -- 3:00 PM

(Bob Hague, WRN) A state Assembly task force will examine human trafficking in Wisconsin.

Co-chair, Representative Jerry O’Connor says human trafficking in our state is a bigger problem that most realize, “And it is a difficult problem. Since a number of people that are involved as victims in human trafficking, this is also their pathway to just surviving.”

The Fond du Lac Republican says the goal of the bipartisan panel is to craft legislation that targets those who take advantage of victims, “Obviously, politics is part of Madison. But there are certain issues that just transcend politics. I believe this is one of them.”

O’Connor says victims are trafficked between major cities in the region, “But we also find this to be in small towns, places where it's not expected. And I think it's a much bigger problem than we give credit for. And it is a difficult problem.”

The Fond du Lac Republican says many victims may feel they have few options, “Where they need this resource, which is sex trafficking, just to pay their bills just to survive, just sort of get money to take care of a child.”

With that in mind, the Fond du Lac Republican says the goal of the bipartisan panel is to craft legislation that targets those who take advantage of victims
