TRIAL FOR GRANTON MAN UNDERWAY

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008 -- 9:17 AM

A jury of 9 men and four women listened to the opening day of testimony in the trial of a 59-year-old Granton man accused of sexually assaulting two 8-year-old neighbor girls over ten years ago.

59-year-old Stephen Kohl is facing four counts of 1st degree sexual assault of a child. Each count carries a maximum penalty of 40 years behind bars.

He"s accused of improperly touching two sisters who lived right down the road and would often come to his home to play with his daughters.

The alleged assaults took place in 1996, but the girls didn"t work up enough courage to come forward until 2005, according to court documents.

Aside from opening statements, the jury also heard testimony from the alleged victims Tuesday. One of the them, who is now 20, testified that some of the details of that summer are now "foggy", but she remembers Kohl touching her on two separate occasions.

The trial is scheduled to run through Friday.
