State Legislature Will Hire Outside Counsel in Absentee Voting Lawsuit
Tuesday, August 22nd, 2023 -- 8:02 AM
(Bob Hague, WRN) The state legislature will hire legal representation in a lawsuit targeting Wisconsin’s absentee voting procedures.
The lawsuit, filed in July by Priorities USA, the Wisconsin Alliance for Retired Americans and a voter against the state Elections Commission, alleges three rules regulating absentee voting procedures violate the state Constitution by treating absentee voting as a “privilege” and not a “right.”
Pending approval by the Joint Committee on Legislative Organization, legal counsel other than from the Department of Justice will represent the Legislature. Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu or Assembly Speaker Robin Vos shall approve all financial costs and terms of representation.
