Greenwood School Board Update

The Greenwood School Board approved new staff members at their recent meeting.
They hired Michelle Blohm as an Elementary Special Education Teacher and Kelly Nielsen as the 7-12 Choir Teacher, a 40% position. They also approved adoption of Wisconsin Model Academic Standards for District Academic Standards for 2023-24. The Board heard updates on Summer Projects, cement work at High school to be completed in next 1-2 weeks, stump removal and gravel in the works in the outdoor classroom, and both buildings are on schedule to be ready for students. The Board also approved the 2022-23 budget transfers and 2023-24 Budget Updates were shared by Superintendent Joe Green. Mr. Green also shared that the only position that remains unfilled is the Technology Education position. Their music department has been filled, with a Loyal teacher teaching their band courses. Band camp will be held in Greenwood with Loyal and Greenwood students. Their choir teacher was hired that evening. They also approved Business Services Employment contract for 2023-24 for Jean Zimmer, as presented and approved the following handbooks for 2023-24 with changes noted and updated: Substitute Teacher, Teacher Mentoring, Elementary Student, Middle-High School Student, Professional Staff, Support Staff, Athletic Code and Athletic.
The Board also heard the Administrators’ Reports. Elementary Principal Joe Green shared that Camp Invention was held the week of July 10th, with many campers attending, including 60 students from Greenwood & Loyal. Kids Club will be running this upcoming school year. They are currently working on staffing. District Administrator and Middle High School Principal Report Joe Green also gave an update on the school forest. Overall payment will be less than quoted due to quality of popple wood. They are working with a logger to create a landing/parking area for future use of the school forest. A group of district staff and admin attending the High Reliability School Institute from July 9-12 in Iowa. A kick off of this program will be August 15th, at Greenwood High School with both Greenwood and Loyal staff attending this full day event. Mr. Green met with CESA 10 and a few others and discussed solar power. More options and numbers will be provided by these groups. This would be an annual credit that goes toward electricity costs with an overall credit given at the end of each year. There are great rebates right now. The East Gym bleachers will be taken out by the end of this summer or between seasons. They’re looking for suggestions for getting rid of some of the wood. They will be scheduling a joint board meeting in August with athletics on the agenda. Goal would be to bring recommendations back to each board for approval at their August board meeting. Deadline for fall sports in the 2024-25 season is October 1st. College Prep English course offered by Loyal High school currently has 8 juniors signed up with transportation logistics needing to be worked out. They are working on the Tech Ed schedule and the possibility of looking at sharing resources, teachers and space. Twelve middle school students signed up with 9 finishing the week with Summer Camp Invention Project that allowed them to learn more about technology, engineering, trademarks and entrepreneurship this past week. Also, Loghan Amborn, Amanda Schlough and Hannah Olson gave a summary of the 3-day HRS Institute held in Cedar Rapids Iowa in early July. Finally, during the Communication from the Public portion of the meeting, Mary Denk, Greenwood Resident, addressed the board with concerns on posting agenda/minutes, head football coach, communication, review of co-op of sports.
