Mosinee Mayor Discusses the Importance of New Flights at Central Wisconsin Airport

(Mike Leischner, WSAU) Mosinee Mayor Brent Jacobson was in attendance last week as the city's Central Wisconsin Airport unveiled a new flight to Orlando via Avelo Airlines.
According to Mike Leischner with WSAU, he says the importance of Wednesday's announcement was not lost on him. "To have a carrier doing direct flights to, obviously a premier vacation destination, is just a tremendous opportunity for everyone."
He says bringing a low-budget carrier to the airport has been a priority for years. "This is just showing you that it's perseverance, it's staying optimistic, and it's chasing after what you want."
He says he also welcomes the opportunities that it could bring for the city's revamped downtown area with families staying over before their direct flight to extend their vacation by a few hours. "Instead of going to Wausau or going to Cedar Creek, we're trying to keep people here in our community and benefit from that as any community would want too."
Jacobson says his definition of success will be increased passenger count and increased foot traffic for downtown businesses. "People that are not from the area are going to the Mosinee Brewing Company, frequenting the mexican restaurant, staying at the Cobblestone Hotel, going to Two's Company, going to some of are other restaurants in the area."
Avelo will run two flights a week between CWA and MCO on Thursdays and Sundays. Officials with Avelo say they would like to schedule additional flights to other vacation destinations such as Burbank, California or Las Vegas if they feel passenger traffic will support it.
