BRUCE MOUND OFF TO RECORD-SETTING START

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008 -- 9:35 AM

A perfect storm of factors led to the best month ever for Bruce Mound Winter Sports Area near Hatfield.

Plenty of natural snow, good skiing weather and excitement about improvements there brought people out in droves in December, according to Clark County Forestry and Parks Director Mark Heil.

"Nearly 6,500 ski and tubing visits and revenues exceeding $117,000," Heil says. "As compared to December of 2006, we had revenues only in the $44,000 range."

Heil says some of the revenue can be attributed to increased season pass sales, but there have been more people on the slopes, too.

"This last week was really strong," Heil notes of the huge crowds.

Of course, many visitors we're probably curious to see the new chalet, which has been well received.

"Everybody thinks it's a great facility. The only negative I hear is we should have built it bigger," Heil notes. "I do think there is a fair number of people coming out because of the chalet, but I think more of it is, not just the chalet, but things are happening and we are progressing."

He's not making any promises and there are still some numbers to crunch, but Heil says the strong December could lead to '07 being the first break-even year at the county-run facility.
