Governor Evers Signs Reading Education Overhaul Bill
Thursday, July 20th, 2023 -- 8:00 AM
(Raymond Neupert, WRN) Governor Tony Evers signed a Republican-authored bill that would overhaul how elementary reading classes are taught on Wednesday.
That bill would provide 50 million dollars to create a new office to help teachers switch to a phonics based reading program in kindergarten through 3rd grade. That bill had been vetoed in previous sessions for not providing funding.
It was nearly vetoed this session for requiring students to be held back a grade if they test poorly, but that was changed during debate in the Legislature.
