ON THE COLBY MENU SATURDAY: MEAT LOAF
Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008 -- 10:06 AM
While some of the great choral music composers may squirm a bit if forced to sit through a choir's performance of Meat Loaf songs, a music teacher in Colby says it's just what's needed to get kids interested in vocal music.Kevin Spindler is preparing for the 10th annual Central Wisconsin Show Choir Spectacular, which will be held this Saturday at Colby High School.
"We have nine schools visiting from the state of Wisconsin," Spindler says.
When kids think of choir music, they sometimes think of the real "stuffy" stuff?you know, Brahms, Bach? that sort of thing.
Show choirs use popular music to get kids interested in chorale arrangements. And it's really taken off.
"Very much so. The show choir season starts with our Spectacular. Every single weekend in Wisconsin, there's a festival going on," Spindler. "There's a new entity where they perform these live, pop-rock dancing shows."
Then, when they see how fun it is, students can ease into an appreciation of more complicated classical music.
"The classical-style of music is out there and it's very important to be there. But, the music that the kids listen to is on the radio station. If we don't start promoting that stuff, we're only doing our self a disservice."
And yes, that includes Meat Loaf. The host school's choir is performing a tribute to him.
