2007 A YEAR OF WEATHER EXTREMES IN REGION
Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008 -- 9:55 AM
Weather-wise, 2007 was a year of extremes. The National Weather Service in La Crosse is out with their Top 10 weather events of '07.
Not surprisingly, the historic heavy rain and subsequent flash flood event August 18 and 19 ranks #1.
It hit mainly southeast Minnesota and western Wisconsin when up to 17" of rain fell along and near Interstate 90 west and south of La Crosse. Flash flooding led to major mudslides, river flooding, and road closures as bridges were washed away.
Seven fatalities were directly related to the flash flooding in southeast Minnesota and another occurred in Richland County, WI.
Two big December snowstorms that hit our area ranked 8th and 9th, respectively.
With all this precipitation, it's ironic that a drought that plagued much of our area in the summer rounded out the Top 10 list.
