Wood County Sheriff's Department Warns of Scam Targeting the Area
Tuesday, July 11th, 2023 -- 11:00 AM
The Wood County Sheriff's Department has been made aware of another scam targeting people in our area.
The scammers are posing as the Paper City Savings Association and sending text messages to members of our community. The text messages are variations of text messages you may receive from your financial institution asking if you recently made a large purchase.
These messages contain links which then direct you to a fraudulent website where the scammers then are able to obtain your personal information. There are many variations of this scam and we have seen them in the area in the past from other area financial institutions. The link below shares more information on how to recognize text message scams: https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-recognize-and-report-spam-text-messages.
As always we urge you to use extreme caution when you receive any communications, including text messages, phone calls, emails or social media messages from any company, financial institution, lawyer, or someone claiming to be law enforcement attempting to get you to provide them any personal information or payment in any form.
Never interact with a number or email address you aren't 100% certain is legitimate. Locate a phone number you know to be valid and contact the business or agency reaching out to you to verify if it is legitimate.
Or you can call your local law enforcement and they can provide guidance 24 hours a day. Wood County residents can contact 715-421-8700 and hit the prompt for dispatch to speak to someone.
